World Transition Initiaves
This is a network of institutions around the world promoting quick changes to drastically reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere: the World Transition Initiative. A preliminary event hapenned in Belo Horizonte - Brasil, August 4th-7th, 2009. There follows a brief account on the event. The Conference started on the evening of August 3rd with a formal event that included an artistic performance inspired on the Amazonas jungle progressively being fired by indigenous people and their awareness about its impact on climate change. Then for the next 3 hours we hear the key speakers of the Conference (about 15) including the President of the World Forum, the Brasilian president of the World Forum, Brasilian environmental and regional and local authorities and diverse national and international experts on climate change. On August the 4th, we had several experts again offering their views on both diagnostic issues and likely solutions to climate change. On the afternoon we had the first participatory stage of the methodology, where people were invited to agree on their vision for a better world where climate change won’t be a threat anymore. Then the leaders of the Process Group, Peter Merry and Morel Fourman introduced the methodology for the next two days (Meshwork – see attached file) and the online communication platform (Gaisoft) to be used to both compile results and develop collaborative actions after the event). There were a high variety of interactions over development of the 3rd and 4th days of the event and people managed to agree on main ‘areas’ and ‘conditions’ for change as well as on specific initiatives to jointly address. In particular for the Belo Horizonte 2020 Campaign on Climate Change, the process group was oriented by a holistic methodology, the Integral Approach, and used the Meshwork methodology and the Gaia soft to coordinate information and knowledge management of the emerging networks. The process group has also influence from complexity and holistic sciences and their applications in transition management.
Currently were reviewing and assessing the process in Belo Horiznte. Soon we'll introduce our observations and invite reflections from other participants and from the process group
